The Shema Discussion Quetions

As part of our commitment to develop devoted followers of Jesus who will develop devoted followers of Jesus, we’ve created a set of discussion questions inspired by Austin’s sermon. These questions are designed to encourage thoughtful conversation with your family or friends over lunch, dinner, coffee, or any time, allowing you to reflect on the message and its application in your daily lives.

How to Use the Questions:

1. Gather Around the Table: Whether you’re enjoying a meal at home, grabbing a quick bite, or sipping coffee, use this time to engage with those around you.

2. Open the Conversation: Choose one or more of the discussion questions provided. These prompts are meant to spark dialogue, so feel free to share your thoughts and experiences.

3. Deepen Connections: This is a great opportunity to connect with your family, learn more about each other, and foster deeper relationships with fellow church members.

4. Put Faith into Action: Reflect on how the principles from the sermon can be integrated into your lives. Discussing these questions helps us live out the Shema, loving God with all our heart, soul, and strength.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Discussion Questions

  1. THINK IT- What is the word or phrase in this passage that stands out to you the most? Why

  2. TALK IT- Share about YOUR story of faith. How did you come to know Jesus? How has He changed your life? Why do you follow Jesus?

  3. TEACH IT- Go around the group and share the best spiritual advice that you could give right now. Bonus points if you use Scripture.

  4. TIE IT- What is one thing that you can do to help remind yourself of God as you go about your daily life? (Examples from the sermon to jog your memory- prayer prompts, Scripture notes posted around, change your phone background, etc.)

  5. What is something that we, as a family, can pray about for you? Is there something coming up that you’re excited about that we can celebrate with you? Is there something coming up that you’re stressing about that we can talk to God about on your behalf?
